Nelson Family Jewellers on Quarry Street is the culmination of more than 30 years of work for John Nelson. We caught up with him to discover more about his business …
It is four years since John opened his own store in Hamilton but his association with the jewellery industry stretches back to the 1980s. John explains: “I joined the National Association of Jewellers in 1987 and a year later started with Zales as a sales assistant.” He continued his dedication to qualifications attaining several more over the years including the Retail Jeweller Diploma and Professional Jeweller diploma.
Over the next three decades, John progressed in his chosen career: “I worked in management positions with long established businesses like Mappin & Webb, Laings and Chisholm Hunter … but then the opportunity came to set up our own family business.”
Nelson Family Jewellers was launched in early 2017, and opened their doors on Quarry Street in October of that year. John describes the business saying: “We sell gold silver and fashion jewellery, watches and giftware. We are also specialists in repairs and bespoke jewellery including watches and clocks.” They also provide in house valuations and pride themselves in customer service and commitment to quality.
They employ three full time and John adds: “I am not content with being just another jewellery business. We want to be the best in whatever we do – from product to customer service – and we want our customers to know that we will go above and beyond to ensure the best experience in client care.”

His inspiration comes especially from friends and family: “I admire many people in business but my family comes first. We are very close and look after each other.” He takes the greatest pride in creating his own business: “My only regret is not doing it sooner!”

Some fantastic businesses are thriving here and opening in such difficult times. We love Chatelherault Park, and the people are brilliant.”
